Introduction

I am Richard Collins.  I'm an attorney in Cullman, Alabama with the lawfirm of Collins & Hancock.  My firm has a general practice, but I handle primarily bankruptcy, personal injury and general litigation.  I have been practicing bankruptcy law for about 9 years now.  Originally I was kind of thrown into it kind of by accident and necessity; however, I have grown to enjoy it over the years and find it interesting and satisfying.

Bankruptcy and debt or financial problems in general are horrible for those going through it to deal with.  I have yet to have a person enter my office happy to be in that situation.  But "Stuff Happens!!!!" to put it nicely.  Some of it is beyond our control, like health problems and layoffs or plant closings.  Through hindsight we can sometimes see other things that we might could have prevented with some different decision making or better planning, such as credit card use, bad business deals, poor budgeting or overly optimistic income projections.  But these actions are still NOT intentional or fraudulent as many in the lending/financing industry would have all to believe.

I enjoy helping people lift an overwhelming debt burden.  For some people it may be done without the need of filing Bankruptcy.  However for others there is just no other way out other than protection under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

With this blog I plan on providing information regarding Bankruptcy and Debt Issues in general.  I will try to put posts in non-lawyer language.  And, I will try to answer any questions submitted.
